Good Eating by the Book

If you find that following Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating is easier in theory than in practice, here's a book - and a way of thinking - that will help you get a handle on smart eating.

HeartSmart Nutrition : Shopping on the Run (Douglas and McIntyre, 2003, $14.95) by dietitian Ramona Josephson is packed with shopping tips, easy-to-follow recipes, simple answers to nutrition questions, and strategies to put it all into practice in the kitchen. In this updated version of the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s 1997 best-seller The HeartSmart Shopper: Nutrition on the Run, you'll learn about HealthCheck, Heart and Stroke’s food information program and about Canada's new labeling regulations. You'll also find tips about nutritious foods that kids live, as well as wisdom about fat budgeting.

The book is a practical guide to making wise food choices. Josephson uses a shopping cart divided into three sections that reflect Canada's Food Guide to demonstrate how to make these choices in the supermarket. She highlights important points with a system of icons that are easy to find and remember, for example, a shopping bag icon points to shopping tips and a penny-wise icon points to buying, storing and cooking tips.

The book is another must-have for your nutrition library.
